Disasters Reveal People

Disasters are so devastating. They reveal how little we can do during weather or earth changes. During times like theses we feel so helpless as we wait for it to pass and hope we prepared to the best of our ability. We try to deal with the devastation that comes after as we rush to assist those that have suffered more than us. They reveal how small humans are in the grand scheme of things.

We always do the same thing in every disaster that we know is coming our way. We panic, worry about preparations for the storm, and become frantic as we scramble to gather things. We buy as much as we can while we over estimate how much we may actually need, like gas. But if you get flooded, what does it matter that your tank is full you aren’t going anywhere?

The one good thing that disasters reveal about people is that we still know how to behave like actual human beings. We all of a sudden gain compassion for others. We’re willing to do things we normally wouldn’t. We may willingly put ourselves at a discomfort for someone who is suffering more than us.

I have heard countless of selfless stories of people. My coworker said he was allowing his neighbors to sleep at his house because they didn’t have AC. My neighbor was willing to allow us to use his generator so we could have power. It’s so much happening and people are really helping each other.

The beauty of disasters is that they bring us together under one race, the HUMAN race. But the key take away is to see how being in the face of death changes how you act with your fellow human. I think we should carry that perspective with us even after the disaster whatever that disaster is. Let us unite under one race and care for each other more than we care for ourselves.
